In the beginning, observe how the nurses change your baby’s nappy (diaper) and do not hesitate to ask any questions you might have. The nurses will show you how to do nappy (diaper) changes. Gradually take on more steps each time until you feel confident with the entire process. Feel free to discuss any concerns or ask for guidance from the NICU care team along the way.
Nappy (diaper) changing can be tiring and uncomfortable for young babies. Never lift your baby by the legs to access their bottom. Instead, hold their feet together, sole to sole, and bend the knees slightly. This helps your baby relax and makes it easier to clean their bottom.
If your baby was born preterm, standard nappies (diapers) might be too large. Your unit will provide nappies (diapers) specifically designed for the smallest babies if they have them.
