Going home with your preterm or sick baby from the neonatal unit is a big step, with lots of mixed feelings. After weeks or months in the neonatal unit, this marks the start of a new chapter for your baby and your family. Caring for your baby at home can also bring new challenges and responsibilities.

The information on these pages will help you prepare for your baby's discharge from the hospital. You will find useful information on important considerations for your journey home as well as managing special care needs at home, such as using oxygen equipment, and how to navigate the first few days and weeks with your baby in a home setting. This includes which doctor or therapy appointments may be necessary and how they are organised to keep track of your baby’s health and developmental progress.
