I would also recommend speaking to other parents, participating in the support groups in the NICU, and talking to a mental health specialist, if you have this opportunity. You don't have to go through this alone.

Support groups and organizations can provide valuable assistance for families going through challenging times. Whether you are seeking emotional support, practical advice, or help navigating the healthcare system, these groups can be a source of comfort, connection, and guidance.

There are regional, national, and international (NICU) parent organizations that offer a variety of resources. Some provide individual and group support both in person and virtually. Some organizations will get involved as early as while your baby is in the NICU and may follow you through discharge or even the baby’s first year or two of life.

Many hospitals have posters throughout the unit with information about these organizations. You can also ask a member of your healthcare team for information on how to access NICU parent organization support or click the links above.
