Elka's story of strength and summit dreams

Elka was conceived through IVF and born at just 29 weeks and 6 days. Weighing only 1.53 kg, she began a remarkable journey of survival across three different hospitals, where every heartbeat demonstrated her extraordinary strength and will to live. Machines breathed for her for weeks, yet her lungs have emerged unharmed – a true miracle of modern medicine.

Elka is not alone in this experience. Approximately 1 in 6 babies are born requiring specialised medical care, and around 1 in 10 are premature (born before 37 weeks). Some arrive as early as 23 weeks and weigh less than 500 grams, spending their first months in hospital, often facing numerous health challenges, medical procedures, and surgeries. This can be a traumatic time, with families experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions. And for many, the journey continues even after going home.

At the age of 11, Elka embarked on a new challenge – one of bravery and determination. Her lungs, once so fragile, now carry her to incredible heights. In 2024, alongside her father Rohan and sister Anika, Elka climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, which stands at 5,890 metres. With inspiring perseverance and strength, Elka reached the summit, making her one of the youngest Australians ever to achieve this feat.
